Drunk driving is a violent, preventable crime. It is the No. 1 killer on our nation’s roads, claiming the lives of almost 11,000 people in 2017. Since 2014, drunk driving deaths have increased by 9%.
Today, MADD released the following statement in response to the arrest of Arizona Cardinals Executive VP/COO Ron Minegar for alleged drunk driving:
MADD has requested a meeting with Cardinals President Michael Bidwell to discuss the next steps in our partnership to eliminate drunk driving from the Cardinals organization. Needless to say, it is heartbreaking and frustrating to have a high-ranking Arizona Cardinals official receive a DUI for the second year in a row. This is especially disturbing knowing MADD recently spoke to the Arizona Cardinals rookies in June and had incredible dialogue about the dangers of impaired driving. MADD can provide the resources and reasons to never drink and drive, but leadership to end drunk driving must come from within the Cardinals organization. A careless decision by anyone within the Cardinals organization to drink and drive undermines that message and belittles the MADD volunteers who take their time to share their devastating story of losing a loved one to drunk driving. With all the options available today, there is no excuse to ever drive while impaired.
