Friday, June 29, 2018, MADD CT joined Connecticut Environmental Conservation Police, EnCon Police, CT State Police, Old Saybrook Police and US Coast Guard Marine Units, for the kick off to 2018 Operation Dry Water.
For the tenth year, officers were on CT water ways providing heightened enforcement and awareness about the dangers of drinking while boating. Operation Dry Water is a National initiative to heightened awareness and enforcement during the three-day weekend June 29 – July 1, just before the Fourth of July – a holiday known for drinking and boating and deadly accidents. Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in recreational boating deaths; in 2017, boaters impaired by alcohol were a factor in 19 percent of boating fatalities. High visibility is extremely effective in preventing drunk driving deaths and injuries and can reduce alcohol-related crashes and fatalities by 18 to 24 percent.
