Recent fatality numbers from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show another increase in traffic deaths across the country. Drunk driving continues to be THE leading cause of death on our roadways, and MADD supports the deployment of self-driving cars because these vehicles won’t drive drunk or under the influence of other drugs. This technology holds enormous potential to save lives, but it must be developed and tested in a way that is safe and protects the public. MADD applauds Waymo for being pro-active and making public their safety efforts to make sure their self-driving cars are safe. The public release of their safety report confirms that they are making great strides to make our roads safer by developing technologies that will eventually help eliminate drunk driving.
