Matthew Bretz
Chair, Governance Committee
Matthew Bretz is a trial attorney with a nationwide practice, representing victims of impaired drivers and other wrongdoers in 35 states and five foreign countries. Seeing the devastating effects caused by drunk drivers led him and his law partner to start “Safe Ride” in Kansas, providing free rides home for those who are impaired.
Mr. Bretz has served on various local boards for more than 20 years, and currently is in his sixth year on the MADD National Board. Matt chairs the Governance Committee.
Matt is a frequent invited lecturer, and has a long history of teaching. Matt taught classical and contemporary physics at Kansas State University before attending law school. He now teaches other trial lawyers across the country through the Keenan Trial Institute.
Matt has testified multiple times before the Kansas legislature on issues concerning victim’s rights. He and his family are responsible for “ditch lights” being required on every locomotive in the United States, enabling motorists to better see trains at night by every locomotive now having two headlights at car-windshield height. This advocacy and resulting federal law followed the death of his sixteen-year-old sister on Valentine’s Day in 1992.
Matt is dedicated to preventing further loss of life by impaired drivers, and to holding drunk and drugged drivers accountable for their actions.
