Official Statement
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is disappointed to learn about the recent incident involving Cleveland Browns football player Lonnie Phelps and the allegations of his arrest for driving under the influence. We are grateful that in this instance, it appears no one was injured or killed.
Impaired driving is a deadly public health crisis. Drunk driving fatalities have increased by 33% since 2019. According to NHTSA, more than 13,000 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in 2022.
We need a solution to stop drivers from continually making the reckless choice to drive impaired. Passive auto technology is the answer to ending this violent crime. The HALT Act requires lifesaving technology to be put into all new cars, which will ultimately make it impossible for drivers to drive drunk.
Athletes like Lonnie Phelps serve as powerful role models for young people, influencing their behaviors and choices. Choosing to drive impaired not only endangers the driver but also puts countless others at risk.
MADD will closely monitor developments in this case as additional details emerge. Our mission remains steadfast to eradicate impaired driving and the devastating impacts it has nationwide.
