Mariah Ida Myers Day 2018
On November 3, 2018, community members gathered to celebrate Mariah Ida Myers Day. Mariah Ida Myers lost her life to a drunk driving crash in 2012 when she was 23 years old, but her legacy and passion for working with youth and adolescents lives on. Mariah’s mother, Claudia Johnson-Myers, coordinates the event every year on the first Saturday of November as a day of interaction and fellowship for the community.
Mariah graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education, and was also responsible for starting many programs for children who struggled with learning disabilities, and catered to lower income based families. During this day, her legacy is remembered by holding sessions discussing topics she often discussed with children and families. This was the second year that MADD was invited to speak on services MADD offers and how to get involved in the community. This year MADD focused especially on the grief services that MADD is able to provide to victims, survivors, and their loved ones.
All of the event’s activities share in remembrance of Mariah and her passion for working with youth and adolescents. Mariah was active in her community and in her college, and Mariah Ida Myers Day honors her legacy of service.
Shermaine Johnson, Victim Services Specialist, attended Mariah Ida Myers Day on November 3rd and had the opportunity to speak about the services Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) offers victims and survivors of drunk or drugged driving crashes. Shermaine provided information about MADD’s prevention and awareness programs across Georgia and networked with local community leaders.
