April 2023 Officer of the Month
Master Trooper Toni Schuck
Florida Highway Patrol
On the morning of March 6, 2022, Trooper Schuck was assigned to provide traffic control and security for the Armed Forces Family Skyway 10K run. Trooper Schuck and a team of fellow troopers were responsible for protecting approximately 8,000 runners who would be crossing the northbound span of the iconic Sunshine Skyway Bridge near Tampa.
To keep the runners safe, troopers shut down Interstate 275. Trooper Schuck positioned herself at one of the nearby rest stops. Just before 9am, officers stationed south of Trooper Schuck reported a vehicle had driven through barricades and traffic cones at an estimated speed of 100 miles per hour. All previous efforts to overtake and stop the erratic driver were unsuccessful.
The driver continued northbound on I-275 at a high rate of speed and refused to stop as she neared the starting line of the race where thousands of runners were located. Realizing that nothing stood between the dangerous driver and the unsuspecting runners, Trooper Schuck maneuvered her Florida Highway Patrol Chevrolet Tahoe directly into the driver’s path. With less than a half-mile between Trooper Schuck and the runners, the vehicles collided head-on, ending the threat to the runners, and leading to the DUI Arrest of the driver who was determined to be highly impaired.
Acting with bravery and selflessness for her own safety, Trooper Schuck was able to stop a reckless and impaired driver from colliding with thousands of civilians, avoiding the potential for multiple fatalities and injuries. She was seriously injured in the crash and was hospitalized. She returned to full duty on June 14, 2022. Trooper returns to duty months after Skyway 10K crash | WFLA
Based on her actions, on March 23, 2023, Master Trooper Toni Schuck received the IACP/Motorola Solutions Trooper of the Year Award during the IACP Midyear Conference in Crystal City, Virginia.
