MADD Florida and its offices located in every region of the state are honored to host the annual Law Enforcement Recognition Ceremony and Dinner and Training Symposium on July 27 – 28 at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort.  This event is to show our gratitude and appreciation of the brave men and women, and their families, for keeping our roads and community safe.

This year, the theme of the event is MADD Heroes.

NOMINATIONS ARE CLOSED!

Nominations are now open!  Nomination categories are available for law enforcement individuals and agencies as well as first responders, breath alcohol technicians, prosecutors, underage drinking prevention individuals and organizations and more.

UPDATE: We recently had an inquiry asking if only supervisors could write nominations.

The answer is: WE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO WRITE A NOMINATION; WIVES, FRIENDS, COLLEAGUES, VICTIMS, SURVIVORS, ETC.

When a Hero Among Us deserves recognition, it is up to all of us to make sure they receive it.

RECOGNITION CEREMONY AND DINNER

On Friday, July 27th at 6:30 pm, MADD Florida will host a delicious dinner at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort to celebrate all nominees and their families and announce the top honorees in each of the categories.  The Recognition Ceremony and Dinner will also feature special Key Note Speakers and our Honorary Host: the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

Dinner will be a three-course meal especially created for our nominee Heroes and guests!

First Course: Mixed Green Salad

Second Course:Seared Chicken in Lemon Herb Butter

Third Course:  Red Velvet Cake with Coffee or Tea

The Ceremony and Dinner is free for all nominees.

TRAINING SYMPOSIUM

As in past years, this event offers valuable training for law enforcement, first responders, breath alcohol technicians, prosecutors and other MADD mission supporters.  This year’s training seminars are:

  • Friday, July 27, 2018

    Option 1: Course Title: Breath Test Operator Re-Certification
    Course Instructors: Officer Andy Meresse

    Course Synopsis: 1:00pm – 5:00pm (4 Hours)

    This course is to renew a current BTO permit for the Intoxilyzer 8000 and will cover the following topics:

    Florida Administrative Code 11D-8, the method of analysis used by the instrument, nomenclature, operation of the instrument, administering breath tests and courtroom testimony.  A practical and written test will also be administered.  This course is only available to sworn officers who are currently employed by a law enforcement agency and have an active BTO permit or a permit that went inactive as of June 30, 2018.  Additionally, if an operator’s permit went inactive/expired prior to December 31, 2017, they will not be eligible for this course and must take the 16 hour new operator’s course.

     

    Option 2: Course Title: NHTSA 4-hr SFST Refresher
    Course Instructors: Sgt. Matthew Rosenbloom (Pasco Cty SO) and Vin Petty (Florida TSRP)

    Course Synopsis: 1:00pm – 5:00pm (4 Hours)

    This course is a standardized NHTSA course that provides refresher training and updates related to NHTSA DWI Detection & Field Sobriety Testing, including all phases of an impaired driving investigation.  This course is not a substitute for the NHSTA/IACP approved DWI Detection & Standardized Field Sobriety Testing training and is intended to provide an update to those who have already completed the NHTSA 24-hour course.  It will discuss the fundamentals of the SFSTs as well as changes in the recently released 2018 SFST Manual.  This course will satisfy the FDOT State Safety Office impaired driving sub-grant mandatory training requirement for receiving compensation for DUI enforcement under an impaired driving sub-grant.

    Option 1: Course Title: 8 Hour Seated Battery Transition Training Course- A Certification Course National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) –
    Course Instructors: Officer Daniel Darren, Collier County Sheriff’s Office

    Course Synopsis: 8:00am – 5:00pm (8 Hours) (only 50 available seats)

    For officers with previous BUI or DUI training but not trained in the new seated battery of standardized field sobriety tests (SFSTs). Upon completion of this course, the officer can properly administer and evaluate the seated battery of SFSTs during their BUI/DUI investigations. This is a certification course.

    Option 2: Course Title: Death Notification Training
    Course Instructors: Kristen Allen, Officer David Greenwell, Helen Witty

    Course Synopsis: 8:30am – 12:30pm (4 Hours)

    Most people who have experienced the sudden death of a loved one are haunted by the trauma of being notified. These vivid memories may last forever and many individuals wish they had somehow been told differently. While there is no easy way to impart disheartening news, there are helpful techniques for delivering the news that can be beneficial to both the survivor and messenger.

    This seminar will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the needs of bereaved individuals as well as an appreciation for the ability to honorably fulfill your role as the official death notifier.

Those interested in the training seminars have flexibility to choose one or two seminars.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Scholarships are available for this event.  The scholarship requirement is that you must attend the Recognition Ceremony and Dinner on Friday night (either as a nominee or as a ticket holder).  If selected as a scholarship recipient please note that you will not receive scholarship confirmation until your dinner reservation is reserved.

Scholarships include:

  • Training supplies & other costs
  • Hotel accommodations for Friday, July 27, 2018
  • Hotel parking fees
  • Hotel breakfast on Saturday, July 28, 2018

Please Note:

  • Any scholarship recipient’s agency address MUST be outside a 35-mile radius from the hotel.
  • You must attend at least two (2) training sessions to be eligible for a scholarship.
    • One (1) Trainings on Friday and One (1) Training on Saturday
  • On the scholarship application there is an opportunity to help us give more scholarships by sharing rooms, if you are willing to share a room, please designate who you will roommate with.
BOTH participants need to fill out scholarship forms for our records.

NEW HOTEL THIS YEAR!

This year, we chose to change the venue of the Recognition Ceremony and Training in order to provide our Heroes with a first-class experience right on the beautiful sun-kissed shore of Fort Lauderdale’s 23 miles of beaches.

The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort has extended a special rate of just $149.00++ for a single occupancy room.  This very special room rate is extended for three (3) days before and three (3) days after the event so that our Heroes and their families can enjoy a bit of fun in the sun and swimming in the warm Atlantic waters.

The special rate includes the daily resort fee waived, free self-parking, free WIFI and one breakfast daily.
