{"id":1693,"date":"2016-09-22T22:15:08","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T22:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/madd.org\/tennessee\/?p=1693"},"modified":"2022-05-30T09:04:57","modified_gmt":"2022-05-30T09:04:57","slug":"madd-tn-announces-2016-legislators-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madd.org\/tennessee\/madd-tn-announces-2016-legislators-year\/","title":{"rendered":"MADD TN Announces 2016 Legislators of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"1693\" class=\"elementor elementor-1693\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-30560a6f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"30560a6f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-308ebc22\" data-id=\"308ebc22\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3be73de3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3be73de3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) announced its \u201c2016 Legislators of the Year\u201d and recognized nine Tennessee legislators for their leadership in the General Assembly to stop drunk driving.&nbsp; These Tennessee Legislators of the Year and their accomplishments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Senator John Stevens and Representative William Lamberth authored&nbsp;SB 2065 and HB 1843 to further strengthen Tennessee\u2019s law that requires ignition interlocks for all offenders.<a title=\"HB1843\/SB2065 which improves Tennessee's Ignition Interlock bill was signed into law by Governor Bill Haslam April 27, 2016!\" href=\"\/local-offices\/tn\/blog\/legislation-blogs\/ignition-interlock-bill-hb.html\"><br>\n<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Representative Lamberth also authored with Senator Randy McNally&nbsp;HB 1478 and SB 1572, which increases penalties for repeat drunk driving offenders on their sixth offense.<\/li>\n<li>Representative Mark White authored legislation&nbsp;improving DUI reporting (HB 2199 and HB 1427),&nbsp;and Senator Mark Norris authored similar legislation (SB 2577 and SB 2576).<\/li>\n<li>Senator Norris also authored&nbsp;SB 1156 boosting penalties for impaired drivers making certain DUI offenders ineligible for probation. Representative G.A. Hardaway authored similar legislation,&nbsp;HB 0401.<\/li>\n<li>Representative Joe Pitts and Senator Kerry Roberts authored&nbsp;Tyler Head\u2019s Law (HB 1514 and SB 1730) to establish a sign program to honor victims of impaired driving.<a title=\"Gina Head-Hieber spent February 23, 2016, in testimony before the House Transportation Committee. She was there to ask for legislation that would allow for Memorial Signs to be erected at the site of drunk driving crashes in Tennessee.\" href=\"\/local-offices\/tn\/blog\/legislation-blogs\/ceremony_to_commemorate_Tyler_Head_Law.html\"><br>\n<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Senator Doug Overbey and Representative Dale Carr authored&nbsp;SB 35 and HB 576, which makes drunk or drugged driving offenders convicted of vehicular homicide ineligible for probation as of January 1, 2017.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a privilege to work with these dedicated legislators who have shown their commitment to preventing the completely preventable crime of drunk driving,\u201d said Kate Ritchie, state program director of MADD Tennessee. \u201cWe count on our legislative champions to help us achieve our ultimate goal \u2014 No More Victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MADD\u2019s advocacy efforts originate from the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving\u00ae that was launched in 2006.
