SUMMARY:June 2020 Online Power of You(th) Zoom Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Graduation and prom may not have happened the way our teens had envisioned this year\, but we know\, as our state slowly opens up\, delayed graduation and prom ceremonies and/or private celebrations are still taking place.  And just like every year\, MADD wants to remind parents how these annual milestone events often bring new opportunities where teens encounter the temptation to drink or use drugs.  Equip your kids with the information and courage that will help them take a stand and know they are not alone when saying no to these pressures. \nOur Power of Youth Zoom Presentation will help them think through plans to avoid peer pressure\, better understand the impact alcohol and drugs has on their growing and developing brains\, and educate them on the best way to help a friend they think may have a problem with drug or alcohol abuse. \nEmail us at tn.state@madd.org to sign-up your child and get your Zoom log-in information.

SUMMARY:June 2020 Online Power of Parent Zoom Presentation
DESCRIPTION:This year has brought so many challenges for our teens and tweens – fear of a new disease\, disappointments about missing important key events\, social isolation from peer groups\, stress from home school\, and anxiety from the unknown.  Our kids handle stress differently than we do.  It’s important for parents to be aware of what these kinds of pressures can mean to kids and to recognize how they can lead to coping mechanisms that involve alcohol and drugs.  Also\, now that our state is starting to open up and belated graduation and/or prom celebrations may be on the horizon\, we remind parents that these types of milestones have traditionally brought new opportunities for teens to encounter alcohol and drugs. \nBut parent involvement is one of the biggest factors in a child’s decision to use or not.  What you say matters!  When you talk to your kids about drugs and alcohol\, they listen.  They may not show it\, but your input is the leading influence on rather or not they participate. \nJoin us for a FREE parent workshop that will offer you guidance on how to have the conversation effectively and make the most of your influence with the Power of Parents!  Contact us at tn.state@madd.org to sign-up and get Zoom login information.

SUMMARY:FREE Power of Parents Virtual Presentation via Zoom October 20 2020
DESCRIPTION:Parents: do you know the warning signs that your teen may be drinking or using drugs? They include dropping out of usual activities\, attempting to mask the odor of alcohol or marijuana\, not caring about things they used to be interested in or their appearance\, becoming unusually aggressive\, hanging out with different friends\, being secretive\, struggling with grades or skipping school. \nMADD understands that COVID-19 has been stressful for all age groups\, and teens are not immune. Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can sometimes cause increased use of alcohol and other substances.  Recent research shows that since COVID-19 related social distancing began\, the number of teens who drink alcohol and use marijuana has decreased\, but the frequency of use increased.  In other words\, fewer teens drank alcohol and used marijuana\, but those who did\, abused the substances more often. Depression and fear of COVID-19 infection were among the predictors of teens using substances in isolation during the pandemic. \nAlcohol and marijuana use are not healthy coping mechanisms for teens. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\, drinking alcohol weakens your body’s ability to fight infections\, increasing the risk of complications\, and making it harder to get better if you are sick. Alcohol use can increase the risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome and pneumonia\, which are sometimes associated with COVID-19. Because it attacks the lungs\, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 could be an especially serious threat to those who smoke marijuana.  Further\, alcohol and marijuana use by teens is illegal and never safe for consumption due to teens’ developing brains\, risks of injuries and death\, as well as the higher likelihood of alcohol dependence in adulthood as a result. \nIf you suspect a problem\, it is important to talk to your kids. MADD has free tools to help. Contact us at tn.state@madd.org to sign-up for our FREE Power of Parents Workshop on Tuesday\, October 20\, 2020\, at 12pm-1pm or to request another date/time to participate.
