DESCRIPTION:MADD’s “Zero Proof” Mocktail Mix-Off fundraiser will be held at the Columbia Fire Department Headquarters located at 1800 Laurel Street Columbia; Sunday\, November 24th starting at 3 p.m. \nThe competition will have several of the Midland’s best restaurants and community groups competing to create the most creative and tasty non-alcoholic beverage they can whip up. Participants will get to sample all the entries and vote on their favorite. The fundraiser also allows you to join MADD in honoring South Carolina law enforcement and other first responders. You’ll get the ingredient list in advance so you can be ready to mix along with Kristian and to treat your designated drivers at your holiday celebrations. This Facebook Live event will be Tuesday\, Nov. 10th from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. \nA purchased “ticket” will get you invited to the Facebook group to learn from Kristian and also hear live music from talented singer/songwriter Anthony Sightler. The event is hosted by Preach Jacobs and promises to be an entertaining hour to benefit MADD\, kick off our 2020 Tie One On For Safety campaign\, and celebrate designated drivers!

This event is to show our gratitude and appreciation of the brave men and women\, and their families\, for keeping our roads and community safe. We’ll also honor community groups and prevention leaders whose efforts align with our first responders to increase safety and prevent needless tragedies. There are categories for officers\, agencies\, prosecutors\, community coalitions\, youth advocates\, SLED agents\, Alcohol Enforcement Teams\, and more!  Nominations closed May 10th. \nAnyone can nominate anyone for a MADDY\, and we’ve made it very easy!  Visit the nomination portal here. \nTRAINING AND SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION\nTrainings being offered: \nFriday\, June 23rd Training Option 2 (1:00 pm to 4:45 pm) \nProsecuting the Impaired Driver: Handling the Drug Impaired Driver Case \n(Application has been made for 3.0 hours of CJA credit for officers and 3.0 hours of CLE credit for attorneys.) \nSpend an afternoon with us for some focused and interactive training about the cooperative roles of the Toxicologist\, the DRE\, the Arresting Officer\, and the Prosecutor in detecting and arresting Drug Impaired Drivers\, and then building a successful case for trial. There will be presentations and opportunities to interact with a SLED Toxicologist\, DREs\, SFST Instructors\, experienced traffic enforcement officers\, and prosecutors. \n(Training provided by the South Carolina TSRP funded by a grant from NHTSA and the SC Dept. of Public Safety.) \nSaturday June 24th Training Option 1 (approximately 8:30 am to 5 pm) \n8-Hour Seated Battery Transition Training Course by NASBLA BUI Program by Lt. Erik Martin and Lt. Denetta Dawson from DNR \nFor officers with previous SFST training but not trained in the scientifically validated seated battery of standardized field sobriety tests (SFSTs). Upon completion the officer can properly administer and evaluate the seated battery of SFSTs during their DWI investigations.  The Seated Standardized Field Sobriety Tests are not designed to replace the Standing Battery.  If possible\, anytime an officer is conducting a Driving While Impaired Investigation the Standing SFST Battery should be used.  This training will provide valuable training in gaining evidence of impairment when administering the Standing SFST Battery is not possible due to the environment\, traffic conditions\, or suspect mobility issues.  Lunch will be provided. \n  \nSaturday\, June 24th Training Option 2 (9:00 am to 1:45 pm) \nProsecuting the Impaired Driver: Holding DUI Offenders Accountable (Part 1) and Drunk Drivers and Dram Shop Cases (Part 2) \n Want Fewer DUI Trials? More Convictions? Less Time in Court? This training will be led by Brandy Duncan\, General Counsel for the SCDMV\, who will help you master Administrative License Suspension Hearings and teach you how use them to help your DUI case. When license suspensions are upheld at the Administrative Hearing DUI Offenders are held accountable and it is easier than you might think!(Training provided by the South Carolina TSRP funded by a grant from NHTSA and the SC Dept. of Public Safety.) (Application has been made for 3.0 hours of CJA credit for officers and 3.0 hours of CLE credit for attorneys.) \nThe second part of the training will be a Lunch and Learn (lunch provided)\, Drunk Drivers and Dram Shop Cases\, with David Lail from 12:45-1:45.  David is an attorney for victims of drunk driving and author of the book\, “South Carolina Dram Shop Litigation: A Practice Guide” and “South Carolina Damages\, Second Edition\, Dram Shop Liability”\, both published by the South Carolina Bar. As a lawyer advocate for drunk driving victims\, Lail is a member of The National Crime Victim Bar Association\, The National Organization for Victim Assistance (VOCA)\, The National Alliance of Victims’ Rights Attorneys & Advocates (NAVRA) and he has undergone victim advocacy training through the U.S. Department of Justice\, Office for Victims of Crime Training and Technical Assistance Center (OVC TTAC). (This training has been approved for 1.0 hours of CJA credit for officers.) \nScholarships are available to assist with the cost of attendance should the nominee’s agency/organization is unable to fund the cost of the hotel room or if the person would have to cover their own cost for any other reason.  To qualify\, the nominee would need to live outside of a 30-mile radius of the hotel and\, if a law enforcement officer\, must also register for a Friday and a Saturday training session if seats are still available\, and would need to attend the June 23rd Recognition Dinner.  The scholarship would be to cover the hotel room cost on June 23rd and potentially June 24th if the person could not reasonably travel home by the end of their Saturday training.   *Please note you are responsible for any room incidentals\, and there will be a required hold on your credit card per hotel policy. \nSimply email sc.state@madd.org with your name\, contact information\, position and place of employment\, and a very brief confirmation that your agency/organization cannot cover the hotel room to apply.  Scholarships are limited and application does not guarantee acceptance. \nRECOGNITION DINNER\nTo attend the Recognition Dinner on June 23rd\, you must register in advance.  If you are a nominee\, you are able to attend as a guest of MADD SC (2 may attend at MADD’s cost if the nomination is for an agency/organization/group)\, but registration is still required.  We encourage you to bring a guest with you and enjoy a weekend in the Charleston area!  Guest tickets may be purchased for $45.  The hotel is extending the discounted room rate 3 days before and 3 days after June 23rd if you’d like to make a trip out of it. \nWe’d love the whole family to be there to see their hero take home a MADDY!  All nominees will be recognized and receive an award at the dinner.  Just being nominated is an honor so please nominate anyone you think deserves the recognition\, not just if you think they will win. \nTo register for the Recognition Dinner and presentation of The MADDYs\,click here. \nHOTEL INFORMATION\nNorth Charleston Marriott.
