Yet, these deeply cherished moments are always at risk. During the 2023 holiday season \u2013 from November 1 through January 1 \u2013 there are 21 million chances you or a loved one could encounter a drunk driver on the road. (1)<\/p><blockquote><p>\u201c<em>The holidays should be filled with love, laughter, and moments to remember, but tragically, too many families will experience their most terrible moments during this time of year. It\u2019s heartbreaking that every 42 minutes <\/em>(4)<em> someone will head to a holiday party, family gathering, or religious service, but never make it there\u2014simply because a driver got behind the wheel when they shouldn\u2019t have,\u201d<\/em> said MADD National President Tess Rowland, who was severely injured by a drunk driver in 2021.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>December is Impaired Driving Prevention Month, yet shockingly, drunk driving crashes surge as much as 40% during the holidays. (2) \u00a0Sadly 1,247 people lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes between Thanksgiving and New Year&#8217;s even in 2021. (2) <u>Find more data here.<\/u> The need for safe driving solutions has never been more critical.<\/p><p>This holiday season, as we have done for the past 3 decades, we\u2019re asking everyone to tie a red ribbon onto their car as a visual reminder to yourself and others that you will never Drink and Drive. See the list below of the locations where you can pick up a red ribbon. Other things you can do to keep our families safe include:<\/p><ul><li>Always utilize ridesharing services, public transportation, walk or designate a non-drinking, unimpaired friend, or family member to ensure everyone gets home safely.<\/li><li>Be a responsible party host: offer fun, non-alcoholic options for designated drivers. Each day, this risk is as high as 347,000 moments that could change your life forever. (1)<\/li><\/ul><p>According to the most recent data available from NHTSA (2021), from Thanksgiving to New Year\u2019s Eve:<\/p><ul><li>During the Thanksgiving weekend, from 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Eve through 5:59 a.m. the following Monday, drunk driving is responsible for 36% of all traffic deaths. The day before Thanksgiving is so dangerous, it\u2019s called \u201cBlackout Wednesday,\u201d with drunk driving accounting for 41% of all traffic deaths.<\/li><li>137 drivers involved in fatal crashes on Thanksgiving Eve (6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.) were alcohol impaired.<\/li><li>Young drivers ages 21-24 represented the largest percentage (44%) of alcohol-impaired drivers involved in fatal crashes on Thanksgiving Eve.<\/li><li>December is Impaired Driving Prevention Month \u2013 yet shockingly, drunk driving crashes surge as much as 40% during the holidays. Sadly, 1,247 people lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes between Thanksgiving and New Year\u2019s Eve in 2021.<\/li><li>On Christmas Eve, 57 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes, 38% of all traffic deaths.<\/li><li>On New Year\u2019s Eve, 35 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes, 34% of all traffic deaths.<\/li><\/ul><p>Year-round, MADD and NHTSA data shows:<\/p><ul><li>Every<span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong> 79 seconds<\/strong><\/span>, someone in the U.S. is killed or injured in a drunk driving crash. (3)<\/li><li>Every<span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong> 39 minutes<\/strong><\/span>, someone in the U.S. is killed in a drunk driving crash.<\/li><li>Drunk driving is involved in <strong>31% of all U.S. traffic fatalities, claiming 13,384 lives <\/strong>(2021).<\/li><li>Americans suffer approximately <span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>388,136 injuries<\/strong><\/span> due to drunk driving crashes every year.<\/li><li>Drunk driving deaths are <strong><span style=\"color: #993300\">up 31% since 2019<\/span>. <\/strong>(2)<\/li><li>There are <span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>347,000 drunk driving episodes each day<\/strong><\/span>, on average (2020).<\/li><\/ul><h6 style=\"padding-left: 40px\">1.
