Community Service

 Court-Ordered Community Service

MADD accepts persons who need to fulfill community service hours due to an alcohol-related offense.  Persons with other charges are accepted on a case-by-case basis.  Once the person has been court-ordered to community service, they must have been cleared by their community service officer in order to work with MADD.  The MADD Program Coordinator must then be contacted by the community service worker seeking to fulfill their community service.  The correct paperwork must be in place before hours are served.  Actual time of service on behalf of the client is tracked from start to end of service.

There are two main activities that a community service worker may serve with MADD.  The most common and available activity is helping with the Victim Impact Panel Program. Victim Impact Panels are a joint venture between the criminal justice system and all directly or indirectly affected by drunk driving crashes.  The panels are composed of victims, victims' families, offenders, and/or emergency personnel involved in these crashes, who describe the crashes in which they, or their loved ones, were involved.  Those who attend the VIP are mainly those who have received DUI/DWAI tickets or minor in possession or minor consumption tickets and attend as part of their sentence.  Community members are welcome to attend.  The VIPs occur 2-3 times per week around the Denver Metro area, on weeknights.  Generally, the community service worker would arrive at 5:30pm to assist with setting up for and checking in the VIP attendees.  Once the VIP starts, the community service worker would sit in on the presentation.  After the VIP concludes, the community service worker would assist with checking out of the VIP attendees, as well as helping to clean up afterwards.  In general, service at each panel lasts about 3 hours.

The second activity is serving in the MADD Office with administrative tasks.  Tasks range from assisting with bulk mailings, to data entry, to organizing of the office.  This is available weekdays during office hours, but only when the service is needed.  Service length varies depending on activity.

If questions arise concerning MADD’s system for community service, please contact Lindsey Federle, Program Specialist, at lindsey.federle@madd.org  or 303-425-5902.
